Mt. Zion High School, a small rural school in Carrollton, Georgia, is home to approximately 450 students. Located near the Alabama state line, the school serves a student body in which 62.6% are classified as economically disadvantaged, with just over half qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Despite these challenges, the school's golf program continues to provide opportunities for students to engage in the game, thanks in part to the dedication of Head Golf Coach Will Gross.
Now in his second year leading the program, Coach Gross has been committed to making golf accessible for his players. Several students interested in the spring season faced challenges in acquiring their own clubs, and some also worked jobs to cover their fees. Keeping costs low was a priority for Coach Gross, but financial barriers still prevented some students from participating. In an effort to alleviate these burdens, he raised money from personal friends and family last year to help lower costs and even covered some expenses out of his own pocket. A generous local supporter also provided a large number of golf balls for practice and matches.
Recognizing the need for additional resources, Drive Fore The Future stepped in to support the Mt. Zion High School golf team. Through this initiative, the players received high-quality apparel, including shirts and quarter zips from Dunning, as well as complete sets of clubs, shoes, golf balls, and essential practice gear. This support not only eased the financial strain on students and their families but also ensured they had the equipment necessary to compete with confidence.
Coach Gross expressed his gratitude for the contributions, emphasizing how much it means to the players to have quality gear for the season. With the right resources in hand, the team is now better equipped to focus on developing their skills and enjoying the game.
Drive Fore The Future remains dedicated to expanding access to golf by providing students with the tools they need to succeed. By partnering with schools like Mt. Zion High School, the organization continues to make a meaningful impact on young athletes who may not otherwise have the opportunity to play. As the season progresses, we look forward to seeing these students grow both on and off the course.
